ACADEMIC GOVERNANCE

The Academic Senate is the ultimate academic authority of the institution. The Academic Senate has oversight of (i) the academic mission and strategy, and (ii) the standards, planning, and delivery of the educational provision of the institution. The detailed mandate and responsibilities are included in the Terms of Reference.

Through Academic Committees reporting to it, the Senate maintains oversight of academic standards and quality assurance, teaching, learning and assessment, curriculum development, as well as research and scholarship activities.

    Provost

    Nhlanhla Thwala started his career in 1986 as a high school teacher in his native Eswatini after completing a BA in History and English plus a Diploma in Education. In 1990 he completed an MA in Linguistics at Syracuse University. In 1994 he completed a PhD in formal Linguistics from the University of California in Los Angeles. His post PhD career started in Indiana University, Bloomington where he was a Visiting Scholar and Coordinator of the African Language Program. He then spent 16 years at Wits University, Johannesburg in various capacities including serving as the founding Head of the School of Literature, Language and Media, Director of the Wits Language School, Researcher at SOAS while on Sabbatical at Wits. In 2014 he left Wits and first joined Advtech (one the largest JSE listed private education companies in South Africa) as Head of the Institute of Independent Education (IIE). He then joined Pearson South Africa as Managing Director of CTI Education Group (a higher education company acquired by Pearson in 2013). In that time he also served as the Academic Director of Pearson Institute of Higher Education. He also had Summer Teaching roles at Yale University, Boston University, and Ohio State University. In 1998 he started at Wits as Lecturer and rose to Senior Lecturer in 1999 before his appointment as Head of the School of Literature Language and Media in 2001.

      Stephen Naicken

      Academic Director

      Stephen Naicken is responsible for the successful delivery of its academic programmes. He also teaches on the institution’s Computing programme. Prior to joining the ALC, he was Research Fellow at Sussex University where his work on Delay-tolerant networking led to a University-spin off startup in sports technology (acquired). His research interests include digital transformation in education and innovative applications of distributed systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Informatics from Sussex University.

          Dr. Fay Hodza
          Dr. Fay Hodza

          Academic Director

          Dr. Fay Hodza is a transformative higher education leader and educator who joins ALU with over twenty years of academic experience. He is a human and community development expert with research interests in gender and sexuality, systemic community engagement, higher education, drug policy reform, human security, and sustainable development in Southern Africa. He also has interests in the political economy of the oil and gas industry in the SADC region. Fay believes that deeper regional socio-political and economic integration is inextricably linked to sustainable peace, stability and the overall development of the SADC region and the African continent at large.

          Fhazhil Said Wamalwa

          BSc, BEng, MSc in Electrical Engineering, PhD (ongoing)

          Fhazhil holds a BSc (honours) in electrical and electronics engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya, BEng (honours) in Electrical engineering, and MEng in electrical engineering from the university of Pretoria and currently pursuing a PhD in sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology. His masters research work was on application on optimal control theory in optimisation of energy systems. His current PhD research is on symbiotic benefits of the nexus projects of rural electrification and smallholder irrigation planning in Africa South of the Sahara. Fhazhil is widely published in reputable journals of his field.

          Anandini Kistamah

          BA, MA Psychology and Msc Clinical Psychology

          Anandini has a background in psychology and she is presently working as a Clinical Psychologist at the Rehabilitation Youth Center. Her research and studies have been undertaken at the Osmania University India (BA and MA Psychology) and the Royal Holloway University, UK (Msc Clinical Psychology). Her focus of research has been on Autism, Body image disorders and Intervention programmes for juvenile offenders. Over her journey, she has gained an enriching experience working with NGOs, disciplined forces and in carceral environments. Her practical and clinical experience working in a variety of settings and with different populations has allowed her to develop a range of skills in understanding and evaluating human behavior from a dynamic, integrative and holistic approach. Her investment in the field of mental health knows no boundaries and she is actively focused on improving the lives of people on a daily basis.

          Dhruv Sharma

          BTech, MS, PhD in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems and Electrical Network Analysis)

          Dhruv holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Network Analysis) from the University of Oklahoma, USA. He also holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Analysis) from the New York University, USA. He is widely published in reputable international journals in the areas of his research interest which include power system network analysis, operations and energy markets, & trading. He has worked on multi-MW renenwable projects in India and secured several awards in his academic and professional career.

          François Sarah

          BSc, MLitt, PhD (Politics and International Relations

          François’ studies and research are focused on the nature and limits of the concept of sovereignty and the theory of political constitutions through a hermeneutical engagement with the writings of the authors of the French counter-revolution and of modern political realism. He is keen to develop a specifically political hermeneutics whose object would be to retrieve old and contemporary political texts and confront them with the living reality of national citizenship in a global world. In the latter respect, he has been exploring the linkages and ruptures between the political and the social, through appraising and questioning both the constitutional and economic assumptions of the world system. He is currently involved in cultural conservancy projects aimed at the preservation of the documentary heritage of the islands of the Indian Ocean.

          Tineyi Madungwe

          BCom, BcomHons Finance, MSc Business Analytics , MBA, PGCAP

          Tineyi Madungwe is a business management faculty teaching various business management courses. He has four degrees which including two undergraduate and 2 masters degrees from Zimbabwe , South Africa and United Kingdom .Tineyi has extensive industry experience having worked across the Banking, , Media and Management Consultancy sectors. Tineyi also taught Data and Decisions as a Leadership Core facilitator in ALC, and was awarded the ALC Leadership Core Faculty of the year award for 2021. His areas of interest and expertise include; Finance and Financial management, Business and Data Analytics, Economics and small business management. Tineyi also leads the Swiss Africa Business Exchange which is student exchange program between ALU and Lucerne University of Applied Science and Arts (HSLU).

          Ismael Essackjee

          B.Eng (Hons), MBA, PhD, PMP, SMIEEE, FCMI, ACMC(P), ACIArb, RPEM, MIET, MIEM

          Ismaël is an Electrical Engineer with over 18 years of working experience at the Electricity Utility Company in Mauritius where he leads his team in the construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission grid. He holds an MBA from the Management College of Southern Africa and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (USA). In 2021, he was awarded a PhD in Renewable Energy Integration by the University of Mauritius. Ismaël is a member of several professional institutions like IEEE, IET, IEM and CIArb. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute of UK. He has been actively delivering trainings in Engineering, Project Management and Management fields for over 14 years. Besides, he is part of the Meta-Coach family and a certified trainer in the Personal Development field where he specialises in assisting people in becoming a better version of themselves and to develop their leadership skills. He is a Certified John C Maxwell Coach, Speaker and Trainer.

          Charles Kagiri

          BSc., MSc. Mechatronic Eng, PhD Electrical Engineering

          Charles Kagiri holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pretoria and has completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Glasgow Caledonian University. He has over 10 years of experience in academia as an educator and researcher in different Universities in Africa. He joined ALC Mauritius in 2019 as a facilitator for the Electrical Power Systems Engineering and has continued to provide mentorship and keep the students committed to the mission of becoming entrepreneurial leaders for the continent. His research experience in energy resource management and sustainability has been instrumental in guiding project work students. He has published multiple papers on these topics and presented his work in various International Conferences.

          Allan Bartolome

          BSc., MSc, PGCAP, FHEA

          Allan is an experienced faculty with 18 years of demonstrated history working in the education industry across different countries. Earned BSc in Computer Science and MSc focused in Computer Information Security from the University of Liverpool. He joined ALC Mauritius in 2019, but before that, he assisted the ALU Rwanda campus for three months in module design. Moreover, Allan taught in Liberia for six years, where he learned about Africa’s culture and ignited his passion for teaching within the continent. He holds industry certifications in Oracle and Microsoft and is certified as Huawei Academy Instructor.

          Yovin Poorun

          BSc(Hons.), MSc, PGCAP, FHEA

          Yovin is currently the Computing Degree Program Lead at the African Leadership College. He also is the module lead and facilitator of several modules of the program. Yovin holds integrity as a crucial value and has been the founding chairperson of the Cross-Campus Academic Integrity Committee and has helped set up the committee’s policy and procedures for both the Mauritius and Rwanda Campuses. He is also managing some of the industry-academia partnerships for the institution so as to provide precious opportunities to our future leaders.
